Taxis To and From Blackpool Airport
Blackpool has been a tourist resort and haven of entertainment since 1863 when Eugenius Birch’s famous North Pier was first erected. Since then the resort has continued to escalate in both facility and popularity and has long been one of Britain’s best-loved attractions. Its small but busy airport, a few miles from the town centre, is a testament to the town’s tourist success.
The price of a cab
One of the country’s oldest airports – hosting public flying meetings back in 1909 - Blackpool International Airport is a short distance from Blackpool town centre and within four miles of the notable attractions that have given the town its worldwide reputation.
Prices for a taxi from the airport will vary widely depending on the type, size of car and added extras. An economy cab to Blackpool Tower or the town’s sea front attractions will usually cost £10-£15 depending on the time of travel. In contrast a chauffeur driven saloon car (to seat four people) with Meet and Greet service would cost around £20 for a single journey to Blackpool train station whereas an Executive people carrier (e.g. a Mercedes V Class) would cost between £45 and £50 for the same journey.
Notable Attractions
With the legendary Pepsi Max Big One (with a drop of 65 metres!), the 104-year-old Sir Hiram Maxim’s Flying Machine, and the new white-knuckle Infusion ride, Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a great day out for families, couples and groups of friends looking for a thrill. The pleasure beach is one and a half miles from the airport and in good traffic takes just five minutes in a taxi.
In recent years Blackpool Zoo has become known for its high standards of animal conservation. Four miles from the airport, the zoo is a ten minute taxi ride from the airport and boasts over 1500 animals, birds and insects from all over the world. An economy taxi to the Zoo for a family of four will cost between £10 and £15.
Opened in 1894, the historic Blackpool Tower stands three and a half miles from the airport and a six minute taxi ride away. It has something for all the family with a spectacular circus, Jungle Jim’s Adventure Playground and a ballroom plus the Walk of Faith at the top of the 158m structure.
First displayed in 1912 the illuminations stretch for over five miles along Blackpool’s front. A taxi to the south pier (one end of the illuminations and two miles from the airport) is a five minute journey. Bear in mind that getting a taxi from the rank at the airport on the day of the lights being turned on is guaranteed to be more difficult than other times of the year.
Extremely popular with family groups, the Sandcastle Water Park (recently re-named Waterworld) sits next to the South Pier and has pools, waves and flumes galore. The Sea Life Centre is also worth a visit with over fifty displays of underwater life. It is well known for its collection of jellyfish and poisonous sea snakes – unique in the UK. Both Waterworld and the Sea Life Centre are approximately three miles from the airport taking less than ten minutes in good traffic.
Types of travel
Blackpool is renowned for attracting diverse groups of people including family groups, hen and stag parties, business travellers and older visitors. The types of taxis that serve the airport reflect the differing needs of Blackpool’s visitors with a good range of economy and luxury travel options. Out of season, Blackpool’s Winter Gardens play host to numerous political and trade union conferences meaning there are good options for executive travel such as day hire of a car including a driver (ideal if making numerous stops) and meet and greet services. High flying business types may even choose to take advantage of helicopter taxis, a luxury option for those travelling through Blackpool airport (though of course they don’t come cheap!)
Most taxi/ minicab companies will offer a choice of vehicle depending on the size of the party – saloon or estate cars will serve groups of five or fewer whereas people carriers or minibuses carry larger groups. Some taxi companies will offer useful additions such as baby or child seats on request.
Flagging one down
Taxis and minicabs must be licensed by the Public Carriage Office which states that minicabs must be pre-booked through a registered minicab office unlike taxi cabs which can be flagged down from the street or hired from a rank. Blackpool is well served by both taxicabs and minicabs so spontaneous travellers shouldn’t find flagging down a taxi a problem unless it is a particularly busy time of year. Bear in mind that pre-booking a minicab will usually work out cheaper. Blackpool airport has one terminal with taxis waiting directly outside arrivals to pick up incoming passengers.
